This quick and easy homemade pasta sauce recipe is packed with juicy tomatoes and fresh herbs. The best part about this recipe is it you can make it in your own kitchen in 30 minutes!

Now that summer has come to an end, I am quickly trying to harvest and freeze the last of our garden tomatoes for winter. I love having canned and frozen tomatoes on hand to make homemade pasta sauce. There’s really just nothing like it!

How to Make Homemade Pasta Sauce

I love adding herbs like parsley, oregano and basil when freezing tomatoes to make homemade pasta sauce throughout the winter! Freezing tomatoes is also the easiest way to remove the skins prior to making sauce! Once thawed, the skins will peel right off! I used the the Weston Pro-1400 vacuum sealer this year and it made easy work of preserving my garden tomatoes in the freezer.

You can use fresh, frozen or canned tomatoes for this recipe! Use whatever you have on hand. Homemade pasta sauce (or marainara) is really very simple and with just a few simple ingredients you most likely have in your pantry, you can the best pasta sauce in under an hour.

Ingredients for Homemade Pasta Sauce

  • 2-3 lb frozen or fresh tomatoes without skins or 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 6oz can tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 4 tablespoons fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried or fresh oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried or fresh oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4th teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/3 cup finely diced onion

Instructions to Make Homemade Pasta Sauce

  • Place tomatoes, tomato paste, parsley, garlic, oregano, salt and pepper in a food processor or blender and blend until smooth.
  • Heat oil  in large sauce pan over medium heat, add onion and cook until softened.
  • Stir in tomato sauce mixture and simmer, stirring occasionally until thickened, roughly 30 min.
  • Add additional spices as needed per taste!

Making Pasta Sauce Ahead and Storing Tips

This recipe has not tested for canning, but you can make ahead and freeze! The steps to freezing this homemade pasta sauce are below:

  • Make the sauce as directed above and allow to cool.
  • Transfer the sauce into freezer save containers, ziplock bags or vacuum seal bags.
  • If using ziplock bags, lay the bags flat and slightly open one end of the bag to allow any air to escape and lay bags flat inside freezer.
  • Label the container with the date processed.
  • Use within 6 months.
  • To use the frozen pasta sauce, allow bag to thaw overnight in refrigerator and heat in sauce pan.

Final Thoughts

I hope you give this quick and easy homemade pasta sauce a try! Serve this sauce with your favorite pasta and try our Simple Cheesy Pull-Apart Garlic Bread!

Random Tuesday nights should always include a ribe Random Tuesday nights should always include a ribeye steak with a yummy garlic and herb compound butter! I used @Lifewaykefir Butter for this recipe because unlike most butters, it’s loaded with probiotics. It’s also a rich and creamy, European style butter…the perfect addition to any steak! I’ve included the recipe for my garlic and herb compound butter below! Look for Lifeway Kefir butter at your local Target or Walmart! Comment BUTTER and I’ll send you the sources from this video!

Garlic and Herb compound butter:

1 6oz container of Lifeway Kefir Butter, softened
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
1 tablespoon fresh chives, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, finely chopped
(Add additional or swap herbs as desired)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

Allow butter to soften and add to a mixing bowl. Whip butter until creamy and add herbs, salt and pepper, whip together. Add compound butter back to the butter container or spread onto parchment and roll up to make a butter log. Refrigerate until ready to top steak. For best results, remove steak from grill or oven and put on a cutting board or serving dish. Immediately add approximately a tablespoon of butter to the top of steak, cover with foil and allow butter to melt over steak while it rests.

Throwing it back to last year and our first annual Throwing it back to last year and our first annual cousin camp…aka-Camp Pop and Ho! I’m planning our 2nd annual cousin camp and this year the two littles can join! We have the grandbabies dropped off just like they’re going to camp…they get a shirt and camp goodies, we camp in the back yard in our 25 year old @colemanusa tent with sleeping bags, make crafts, play in the creek, swim and have a campfire! It’s the most fun! They only stay one night now since they’re still so little…but I hope we can have a whole week when they get a little older! Do you have “cousin camp” or “grandma camp”? I’d love to hear what you do at camp if so❤️
