How to Make Homemade Pasta Sauce

I love adding herbs like parsley, oregano and basil when freezing tomatoes to make homemade pasta sauce throughout the winter! Freezing tomatoes is also the easiest way to remove the skins prior to making sauce! Once thawed, the skins will peel right off! I used the the Weston Pro-1400 vacuum sealer this year and it made easy work of preserving my garden tomatoes in the freezer.

You can use fresh, frozen or canned tomatoes for this recipe! Use whatever you have on hand. Homemade pasta sauce (or marainara) is really very simple and with just a few simple ingredients you most likely have in your pantry, you can the best pasta sauce in under an hour.

Ingredients for Homemade Pasta Sauce

  • 2-3 lb frozen or fresh tomatoes without skins or 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 6oz can tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 4 tablespoons fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried or fresh oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried or fresh oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4th teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/3 cup finely diced onion

Instructions to Make Homemade Pasta Sauce

  • Place tomatoes, tomato paste, parsley, garlic, oregano, salt and pepper in a food processor or blender and blend until smooth.
  • Heat oil  in large sauce pan over medium heat, add onion and cook until softened.
  • Stir in tomato sauce mixture and simmer, stirring occasionally until thickened, roughly 30 min.
  • Add additional spices as needed per taste!

Making Pasta Sauce Ahead and Storing Tips

This recipe has not tested for canning, but you can make ahead and freeze! The steps to freezing this homemade pasta sauce are below:

  • Make the sauce as directed above and allow to cool.
  • Transfer the sauce into freezer save containers, ziplock bags or vacuum seal bags.
  • If using ziplock bags, lay the bags flat and slightly open one end of the bag to allow any air to escape and lay bags flat inside freezer.
  • Label the container with the date processed.
  • Use within 6 months.
  • To use the frozen pasta sauce, allow bag to thaw overnight in refrigerator and heat in sauce pan.
